CalicoMom Toni here with a question. I recently switched to Tidy Cat Clumping litter and found the dust, when I scoop, is far less than the Special Kitty clumping litter, I was using. However,
ALL the cats have stopped covering, and I am wondering if it is the perfume, which is very strong. Please tell me what type of cat litter you use. Thanks in advance.

We usually use Scoop Away or Tidy Cat clumping litters. The Food Source tries to stay away from scented litters because a couple of us are supposedly allergic to them. (what the shelter told him, anyway)
Have all the kitties stopped covering, or only one or two? Perhaps this is someone's protest against the change. :-)
We use Clumping Litter in our house too. Faz seems to like it and you can chuck out the lumps after she uses it so it stays fresh for a while.
We hated all the dust from every kind of clumping litter, especially how it would get all slimy when it would get a little bit wet. So, we switched a few years ago to those litter crystals. The cost has gone down a lot since it first came out. It is made of silica (like those little packets you get in a pair of new shoes). You just scoop the solid stuff our, and stir up the rest of it. We like it a lot!
I cover and I use scoop away. I also have an open litter box. So any scent from the litter is not too strong for me.
Mum just adds more as needed and has switched, she just adds the new stuff in and I adapt. I think she has a bucket of Tidy Cat coming up next!
We use crystals and love them!
We use a combination of crystals (the blue and white ones) and scoopy litter from Petco. it keeps the odors and dust down when mommy mixes the together.
We have been usin' SWheatScoop clumpin' litter for a long time, but it's furry dusty, so Mom and Dad are tryin' the (new?) clumpin' version of Feline Pine, and so far it seems like there's lots less dust. And we likes it too!!
Momma just switched to Arm & Hammer OdorAlert. It's a little bit dusty, but not too bad. We like it...Momma likes that efun if we don't cover it helps wif the odors.

We Ballicai use the Tidy Cat Clumpin Littur and we've been usin it a long time -- Brainball started out with clay littur but Momma switched him ofur to the Tidy Cat clumpin littur before Dorydoo and the rest of us Ballicai gotted here, so the clumpin is what we're all used to. It's probly the smell the Girls are objecktin to -- it's scented but we Ballicai are used to it so it doesn't bothur us.
Momma has been thinkin of tryin the crystals, though cuz she's hearded so much good sutff about 'em. But we Ballicai will make the finul decishun, of coursies, cuz it's our potty!
Kittyhugs and purrs from MaoMao!
Brainball sends lots and lots of lovies and rumbly purrs to his Patches Lady!
Caesar and I used tidy cats.. they have one that is not so smelly.
Now everything is mine and mommie says I am very neat and tidy.
hey, I am a tidy cat :-)
(Caesar used to be very messy and neh-ver covered. ever.)
We use Swheat Scoop. It is dusty but mom doesn't mind that so much. It's excellent at keeping odors down and I just love it because it's so soft and kickable. We used to use Feline Pine a long time ago but that when there was only two of us. We've never used anything with perfumes because that makes mom sneeze!
We use World's Best Cat Litter (Extra Strength). It's made from corn and smells like ... corn!
Mom use special kitty scoopable (Mom says she'd have to give up eating if she hadta buy somefin else fur alla us.) Sum of us cover and sum of us don't, so I don't guess it makes no diffrance to us. Big perfumes mite be the purroblem tho.

Meowm gets Feline Pine for me. Not the pellet kind either...the kind that is like sawdust. It does spread a little on the floors. She used to use clumping clay kind, but worried about that clumping in my tummy when I cleaned my feet after coming out of it. She feels much more comfy with feline pine.
We use Everclean (for Multiple Cats) - it's not as dusty as some and for some reason Mom really likes it.
I use tidy cats small spaces with no issue. but that is all I have ever used with her. I live in a 900 sft condo so we need it and the litter box is in the bedroom with no issues. I do remeber with a older cat when I switched to a different litter with scent he would not use it and if he did he didnt cover he wanted in and out fast
The short answer is that we use Premium Choice over a thin layer of Nature's Miracle litter on the bottom of each pan.
The longer answer is here.
Hope this helps!

We use Scoop Away clumping and we also use old-fashioned Tidy Cat clay litter. Some of the old-timers around here won't use clumping litter, so I put a small bowl-full of clay litter on top of newspapers in some of the litter boxes. Those get dumped as soon as they are used and then fresh clay litter on top of fresh newspapers.
Since all of your cats quit covering when you switched, I would say they object to the perfume. If only one cat wasn't covering, then that would be an issue of that cat trying to establish it's dominance as Top Cat over the others.
Yes, my house is always dusty...
Did you try an unscented litter? Or how about mixing the new kind with the old, gradually changing to all new as they accept it.
