I forgot to mention, it was Sept., 2000. I never did know why her name was penciled in on the calendar, I didn't want to know. I had waited long enough for someone to give her a home, her home was with us. I know now that was decided the day I first saw her. (It was the first day I did volunteer work; a coincidence?) Life works in mysterious ways!!
She was taken in to be spayed and to get her shots, (the spaying was unnecessary, as she was already spayed.) It said on her sheet she was five or six years old. I wonder, to this day, why someone would drop her off, in a box and leave her at the door of the shelter, after investing that many years.
I brought my own carrier, and tucked her inside. This was the one and only time she never fussed about going into it! I put her in the passenger seat, so she could see me; she was so good on the drive home, her forever home!
I put her in our spare bedroom so Patches could get used to her. While in there, she came out of her shell. I got to see what a darling girl she was. We call her our play cat, anything that moves is game for her, and she loves bugs. She sleeps cuddled up next to me every night, and always sings me a song before she goes to sleep. She is still very timid and hides whenever someone comes. If we get overnight company she stays in the closet until they leave. She still growls when she is upset about something, but she doesn't hide under the bedspread anymore.
I named her Mittens Pollypaws (Pollypaws for polydactyl.) We love our Mittens, our Toes of Many Colors. Everyday she gives us joy. With us she is happy, safe and content. She is our Big Teddybear.

I'm so furry glad you found each other!
PS What kind of purresent Patches???? Did he like it?
Lucky Mittens!
I too always wonder about older cats who wind up in shelters or with rescue groups and what happened to make them be there. Caroline was like that--she looked like she had been well cared for, was healthy and had been spayed already, yet there she was. No one at the shelter knew much (not a surprise), had no idea of her age, nothing. Initially I thought she was about 2, but really I think she's older than that. Not that that matters one bit--I'm glad I found her.
William's mom.
I often wonder also what makes someone just abandon their animal(s). It just doesn't make sense. I know the reasons that the former owners of Abby gave her up ( I don't like them, but she now has her furever home) but all of our other cats were just dropped off somewhere. But now there is a happy ending because all 5 of our furkids have happy and safe homes FUREVER!
I also don't understand most people when they give up pets (usually it's, well, we're moving and can't take the cat/dog with us)I could never imagine giving up any of my babies. We have moved them from one end of the country to the other and back again, without ever thinking that we had to give them up just to move. It was not coincidence that you found Mittens on your first day there - it was divine intervention. - Meezers Mom Mary
What an awesome story. Mittens was meant for you. That's all there is to it.
Storm & Mocha's Mom here:
Such a wonderful story. So glad that they have found a furever home. We can't imagine giving up our little babies.
Mom says that one of her adult cats came to us because she was the child of a divorce. The man didn't take her and the woman moved to an apartment that didn't take cats. She doesn't know how anyone could make a choice like that if you already had a cat!
What a lovely picture of those beautiful and unique paws! She was meant to be with you all.
What a good story! I'm so glad you both found a forever home. When our Mum and Dad were apartment hunting, the only non-negotiable thing was 'must allow cats'. They have their priorities straight.
Those paws are HUGE! We don't have double paws, but admire them very much. It must be so easy to dip into glasses and stuff.
It is so clear that both Patches and Mittens knew that they wanted and that they were meant to be with you. :) And that is so sweet and truly touching.
Was it like that with Mistrie too? Oh, please please please tell us about Mistrie now!

Purrs to Mittens and Mom. You were made for each other.
Mittens needed someone with lots of love and patience, and all that growling and stuff was her way of weeding out the people who couldn't help her. See? It worked!
Our Lizzie would have hidden from everyone too, if she had gotten to the shelter itself. Fortunately, Lizzie was still in quarantine away from more aggressive cats when Pat saw her and decided to adopt her immediately.
Wow, so Mittens is about 12 yo now? Love her paws.
What a beautiful story of love and kindness. She's a lucky kitty and you are a lucky family.
